The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media user, Akaninyene Udo, for allegedly spreading false security information capable of causing panic among residents.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, the suspect, who hails from Akpautong in Esit Eket Local Government Area and operates online under the name “AK Philo,” was apprehended after investigations into a viral post that read, “Eket get ready for us.” The message was accompanied by a photograph of an armed bandit, causing widespread fear across Eket and neighbouring communities.
The police said the misleading post created unnecessary anxiety among members of the public despite the prevailing security situation in the state remaining peaceful and under control.
The Command reassured residents that there is no security threat requiring alarm, adding that security agencies are maintaining vigilance and implementing proactive measures to protect lives and property.
It explained that the arrest was part of efforts to preserve public order and discourage the circulation of false security information capable of destabilising the state.
The police further disclosed that investigations into the case have been concluded and that the suspect will soon be arraigned in court in line with the law.
Authorities also revealed that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals who may have participated in creating or spreading the controversial content.
The Command warned the public against producing or sharing unverified security alerts, fake news and other misleading information, stressing that such actions constitute criminal offences and will attract prosecution.
Residents were advised to rely on official channels and credible sources for security-related information before forwarding or acting on any reports. The police also encouraged members of the public to remain calm, obey the law and promptly report suspicious activities or genuine security concerns through the nearest police station or the Command’s emergency lines.
