Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has ordered an immediate emergency response following the derailment of a train on the Warri–Itakpe corridor in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, which claimed four lives and left several passengers injured.

The incident, which occurred along the Warri–Itakpe route, was described by the governor as tragic and deeply distressing, with concerns raised over the impact on affected families and the wider community.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, Oborevwori expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery, assuring that the state government had activated emergency response measures to support rescue and relief operations.

He directed the Commissioner for Special Duties, alongside the chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas, to immediately proceed to the accident site to coordinate evacuation and oversee rescue efforts.

The governor also commended the rapid intervention of security agencies, noting that the Commissioner of Police visited the scene and deployed personnel to restore order and safeguard passengers’ belongings.

According to the statement, injured victims were evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment, while those who escaped unhurt were moved to town for safety. The bodies of the deceased were deposited in a morgue.

Buses were also deployed to assist in transporting survivors and injured passengers from the scene.

Giving an update, the Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Area, Monday Odigwe, confirmed that 35 injured passengers were receiving treatment across three medical facilities, 13 at Central Hospital, Agbor, 12 at General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu, and 10 at General Hospital, Owa-Alero.

He added that arrangements were underway to remove the derailed train from the track.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed the derailment involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service at Agbor, stating that emergency and rescue operations were immediately activated and all passengers had been accounted for as investigations continue into the cause of the incident.
