The Kwankwasiyya movement has dismissed reports suggesting that its leader and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is considering leaving the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) over alleged disputes surrounding the party’s candidate list in Kano State.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, the movement’s spokesperson, Habeeb Saleh Mohammed, described the reports as mere speculation being spread on social media, insisting that there was no basis for the claims.
According to him, the faction conducted its primary elections in line with the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and complied with all legal requirements.
Mohammed explained that the process leading to the primaries involved consultations and consensus among stakeholders, resulting in the emergence of candidates for various positions without notable objections from members or aspirants.
He added that after the exercise was concluded successfully, the list of candidates was forwarded to the party leadership for the necessary action, stressing that subsequent decisions now rest with the party.
The spokesperson also maintained that the issue of Kwankwaso leaving the NDC had never been discussed within the Kwankwasiyya movement, describing the reports as unfounded rumours.
His reaction follows media reports alleging that the NDC replaced several candidates associated with the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State over an alleged breach of a 60-40 power-sharing arrangement said to favour Kwankwaso’s bloc.
The reports also referenced a document reportedly signed on Monday by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga.
