Ogun APC Rejects Iyabo Obasanjo’s Maltreatment Claims

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun state has rejected allegations by Iyabo Obasanjo, a former senator who represented Ogun central, that she was subjected to intimidation and disrespect within the party.

On May 31, Iyabo announced her resignation from the APC over alleged disrespect, intimidation of supporters and other grievances.

Her resignation comes barely months after joining the party and indicating her interest in the governorship ticket, which she later suspended following the party’s consensus arrangement.

Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, Femi Nuberu, APC publicity secretary in Ogun, said claims contained in Iyabo’s resignation letter were inconsistent with the realities of her experience in the party, insisting that she was neither excluded nor intimidated.

He said Iyabo was given a level playing field throughout the process, adding that the party remains committed to democratic principles and respects the right of members to make political choices.

“The process remained transparent, inclusive and free from discrimination. Senator Obasanjo enjoyed the same rights, privileges and opportunities available to every other aspirant,” the statement reads.

The party said her decision to leave shortly after joining the APC reinforces the perception that “her membership was driven primarily by the pursuit of the governorship ticket” rather than commitment to the party’s ideals.

The APC added that several party leaders and aspirants who did not secure their preferred outcomes during internal contests have remained loyal to the party and continued to support its growth.

According to the party, politics requires loyalty, patience, sacrifice and commitment to shared goals, noting that democratic contests inevitably produce winners and losers.

The APC also questioned claims of unmet conditions and grievances, arguing that some aspects of the governorship primary process were still ongoing at the time of Obasanjo’s resignation.

While wishing the former senator well in her future political endeavours, the party reaffirmed its commitment to unity, inclusiveness and electoral success in Ogun state.
