A late-night fire outbreak on Thursday destroyed several offices and commercial shops along Murtala Mohammed Way in the Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.
The blaze, which occurred near the First City Monument Bank (FCMB), reportedly started at a salvage yard popularly known as Takumbo Market before spreading to nearby buildings.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the agency received a distress call at about 10:54 p.m. from one of its officers, HFS Ibrahim Sabo.
Following the alert, firefighters from the Service Headquarters and other metropolitan fire stations were mobilised to the scene to contain the inferno.
According to the statement, emergency responders arrived to find a one-storey building and an adjoining commercial area, covering approximately 300 by 200 feet, engulfed in flames.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire originated from the salvage yard, destroying a large quantity of goods and property before extending to surrounding structures.
Among the affected properties was the upper floor of the Kanawa Building, where two offices, two parlours, two toilets and a kitchen were damaged. The fire also destroyed two stores on the ground floor occupied by TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited.
The Kano State Fire Service attributed the incident to an electrical spark.
Its Director, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents and business owners to observe proper fire safety measures, particularly by ensuring electrical installations are well maintained to prevent similar incidents.
He also encouraged the public to promptly report fire outbreaks to the nearest fire station, stressing that early intervention helps minimise damage and protect lives and property.
No casualties were recorded as of the time the report was filed.
