Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has commended the House of Representatives for advancing legislation that supports the establishment of state police, describing the move as a significant step toward improving Nigeria’s security framework.
In his Democracy Day address on June 12, 2026, the governor said the legislative development reflects a bold commitment by lawmakers to strengthen the country’s ability to protect lives and property.
According to him, the proposal for state police aligns with the urgent need for a more decentralised and locally responsive security system capable of addressing the unique challenges faced by different states and communities.
Alia, who has consistently advocated for state policing, urged Nigerians to embrace the reform in good faith, stressing that it is aimed at improving grassroots security rather than undermining existing security structures.
He noted that with proper safeguards, accountability measures, and constitutional oversight, state police could work alongside existing agencies to enhance intelligence gathering and ensure faster responses to security threats.
The governor also described the initiative as an important milestone in efforts to build a safer country, adding that it represents progress in ongoing national security reforms.
He further highlighted his administration’s efforts to improve security in Benue State, including collaboration with security agencies, the provision of over 150 operational vehicles and 600 motorcycles, and the establishment of local security outfits such as the Benue State Civil Protection Guards and the Anyam Nyor Joint Task Force.
According to him, these interventions have contributed to improved security conditions and the gradual return of peace in several communities across the state.
