Former Army Spokesperson Abubakar Dies in Bandits’ Custody in Katsina

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who passed away while being held in captivity by bandits.

The announcement was made on Saturday in a statement by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu, who described the incident as a painful loss to both the state and the country.

According to the statement, the retired senior military officer died as a result of complications linked to diabetes and hypertension while still in the hands of his abductors.

The government explained that coordinated efforts were made by security agencies and state authorities to secure his release, but all attempts were unsuccessful.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in bandits’ captivity. Despite sustained efforts by the government and security agencies to ensure his safe return, the situation ended in tragedy,” the statement read.

It added that his death represents a significant loss not only to his immediate family but also to Katsina State and Nigeria as a whole.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a “dark moment,” stressing that it highlights the urgent need to strengthen security operations and intensify the fight against banditry in the region.

He extended condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with federal authorities and security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice and curb insecurity.

“The government remains fully committed to ensuring the safety of citizens and ending banditry in Katsina State,” the statement added.

Abubakar was abducted alongside his wife on May 30 while travelling within Katsina State. Reports had earlier indicated that the kidnappers demanded the release of detained fighters and the return of seized livestock in exchange for their freedom.
