Pope Leo XIV has called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to safeguard vulnerable communities in Benue State, amid continued violent attacks in the region.
The Pope made the appeal during the unveiling of a 14-foot memorial wall dedicated to victims of the Yelewata killings, marking the first anniversary of the tragedy that occurred on June 13, 2025.
His message was delivered by the Catholic Bishop of Makurdi Diocese, Wilfred Anagbe, who also joined other religious and community leaders at the memorial event.
In the message, Pope Leo XIV expressed solidarity with the people of Yelewata, assuring them of ongoing prayers while urging leaders across all levels to work together toward lasting solutions to the insecurity affecting Benue State.
The memorial wall, constructed and commissioned by American missionaries led by Judd Saul, honours 271 victims of the attack, including 66 children, 83 women, and 122 men. Their names are engraved on the monument as a lasting tribute.
The project also featured the donation of relief materials, including food and non-food items, as part of broader international support efforts aimed at addressing violence against vulnerable communities in Nigeria.
