UK Appoints Peter Vowles as New High Commissioner to Nigeria

The United Kingdom has named Peter Vowles as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria, with his appointment set to take effect in September 2026.

‎

‎The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Vowles will succeed Dr. Richard Montgomery as the British government’s top diplomatic representative in Nigeria.

‎

‎According to the FCDO, Vowles currently serves as the British High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023. He brings more than two decades of experience in diplomacy and international development, having worked extensively across Africa and Asia.

‎

‎Before his posting to Zimbabwe, he served as the FCDO’s Transformation Director between 2022 and 2023 and was the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022. He also held the position of Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories at the former Department for International Development (DFID) from 2018 to 2021.

‎

‎His previous assignments include serving as DFID Country Director in Kenya, Deputy Country Director in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Head of Global Partnerships in India. He also worked in Afghanistan as Governance and Security Team Leader.

‎

‎Earlier in his career, Vowles was a Health and Development Consultant with Mott MacDonald and held several development and health-related positions in Bangladesh, including Programme Director for Population and Health and World Bank Health Adviser.

‎

‎He also participated in the UK National Health Service Management Training Scheme and worked with Raleigh International before taking on various development roles in Zimbabwe. Between 1992 and 1993, he served as a teacher under Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture.

‎

‎The appointment reflects the UK’s continued commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations with Nigeria as Vowles prepares to assume office in September 2026.
