INEC Declares Asogwa Winner of Enugu North Senatorial By-Election

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ikeje Asogwa, has been declared winner of the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election conducted on June 20.

‎

‎Asogwa secured 162,360 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Chief Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 9,299 votes.

‎

‎The by-election was organised to fill the vacancy created by the death of former senator Okey Ezea, who represented the district until his passing on November 18, 2025.

‎

‎Announcing the result in Nsukka on Sunday, the Returning Officer, Professor Christian Ezeibe of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, stated that Asogwa recorded the highest number of votes and met all constitutional requirements to be declared elected.

‎

‎According to Ezeibe, the senatorial district had 727,340 registered voters, while 184,094 voters were accredited to participate in the poll.

‎

‎Other candidates in the race recorded significantly lower votes. Chika Idoko Emmanuel of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) garnered 1,676 votes, while Kingsley Aneke of the Boot Party (BP) polled 1,607 votes.

‎

‎Similarly, Ejike Simon Eze of the Labour Party (LP) secured 1,027 votes, OssElias Okwudiri Ossai of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) received 3,129 votes, and Charles Ugochukwu of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) polled 667 votes.

‎

‎Reacting to his victory, Asogwa expressed appreciation to voters across the six local government areas that make up the Enugu North Senatorial Zone, describing the outcome as a clear demonstration of their confidence in his candidacy.

‎

‎The senator-elect pledged to deliver effective representation and work diligently to justify the mandate entrusted to him by the electorate.
