Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has assured Nigerians that the proposed state police system contains adequate safeguards to prevent its misuse by state governors or other political actors.

‎Speaking during a television interview on Wednesday, shortly after the Senate approved a bill seeking the establishment of state police across the country, Sani dismissed fears that governors could exploit the security outfit to harass opponents or stifle dissent.

‎According to him, the legislation includes strict checks and balances designed to ensure accountability and prevent political interference in the operations of state police commands.
‎
‎The governor explained that while a state governor may nominate a commissioner of police, such an official cannot be removed at the governor’s discretion. He noted that any removal process would require the involvement and approval of relevant institutions, including the Police Service Commission or Police Council, as well as both the National Assembly and the State House of Assembly.

‎Sani, who has consistently advocated for state policing as a solution to Nigeria’s growing security challenges, expressed confidence that the initiative would gain widespread public support once fully understood.

‎He maintained that the proposal is not politically motivated but is aimed at strengthening security and improving the protection of lives and property across the federation.

‎The Senate passed the state police bill after considering constitutional amendments transmitted by President Bola Tinubu. If eventually signed into law, the legislation will introduce a dual policing structure comprising a Federal Police Service and separate State Police Services.

‎Under the proposed framework, governors would have the authority to appoint state commissioners of police, subject to confirmation by their respective state legislatures.
‎
‎Lawmakers also incorporated provisions intended to safeguard civil liberties and prevent the abuse of power, addressing concerns raised by critics of state policing.
