Ondo State Government has confirmed the appointment of Professor Tomola Obamuyi as the new Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, following approval by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The announcement was contained in a statement released on Friday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan. According to the statement, the appointment followed the recommendation of the university’s Governing Council in line with the institution’s governing laws and established procedures.
The Governing Council, led by Tunji Abayomi, had shortlisted and interviewed 15 candidates through a joint selection process involving the council and the university senate. Professor Obamuyi emerged as the top candidate and was subsequently recommended for the position.
He will take over from the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige.
Professor Obamuyi is a scholar of Banking and Finance with extensive academic and administrative experience. He previously served as Head of the Department of Banking and Finance at AAUA and also became the first substantive Dean of the School of Management Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).
Over the years, he has held several academic leadership and international roles. These include participation in accreditation teams of the National Universities Commission and serving as a review panel expert for higher education quality assessments in Namibia.
He was also recognized in 2015 as “Best Professor of Banking and Finance in Africa” by the Africa Education Leadership Awards in Mauritius.
In addition, he has presented academic papers in several countries, including Finland, the United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden, Ireland, Ghana, Zambia, Uganda, Ethiopia, India, and the United States.
Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed confidence that Obamuyi’s experience would strengthen the university’s performance in teaching, research, and community service. He also urged the new Vice Chancellor to promote peace, innovation, and collaboration within the institution.
