Obasanjo Links Global Warming to Human Greed, Calls for Greater Environmental Protection

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has blamed global warming on human greed, selfishness, and the careless destruction of the environment, urging individuals and governments to take stronger steps to protect nature.
‎
‎He made the remarks in Kano during a programme organised in honour of former Nigerian Bar Association President, Abubakar Mahmoud, and his Environment and Sustainability Initiative and Trust Fund.
‎
‎According to Obasanjo, climate change is real and continues to worsen because of harmful human activities that upset the natural balance of the environment.
‎
‎He said God created the world in harmony, but human actions driven by selfishness and negligence have caused significant environmental damage. He stressed the need for everyone to play an active role in preserving the planet for future generations.
‎
‎The former president also disclosed that he has planted more than 3.5 million trees to help reduce the effects of climate change, describing environmental conservation as a shared responsibility that benefits the entire world.
‎
‎The Kano State Government applauded the initiative and promised to support its continued growth. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Dahiru Hashim, announced that the state had approved the donation of 10,000 tree seedlings to the Mahmoud Environmental and Sustainable Trust to strengthen its conservation efforts.
‎
‎Speaking at the event, Abubakar Mahmoud said the initiative was established to promote environmental sustainability and protect ecosystems for both current and future generations. He explained that what began as a small project has expanded into a larger programme that safeguards surrounding communities and preserves different plant species.
‎
‎The event was attended by several prominent personalities, including the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Attahiru Jega, Kano State Government officials, and other stakeholders.
‎
‎Participants at the gathering emphasised the need for collective and deliberate action to tackle climate change and curb environmental degradation.
