The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has condemned the killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo Risku, and his associate, describing the incident as shocking and unacceptable.
In a statement released on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume expressed deep sadness and anger over the attack, which he said poses a threat to ongoing peace efforts in Benue State.
He described the killing as a “heinous act” that undermines the progress made in rebuilding trust and harmony among communities in the state. According to him, such violence must not be allowed to reverse the gains achieved through reconciliation and dialogue.
The SGF noted that the incident occurred at a time when Benue had been recording gradual improvements in security and inter-communal relations, warning that criminal elements must not be allowed to disrupt the fragile peace.
Recalling his time as governor of Benue State, Akume reiterated his long-standing advocacy for unity and peaceful coexistence among all groups, stressing that development can only thrive where there is peace and mutual respect.
He called on residents to resist attempts by individuals or groups seeking to incite violence or retaliation, urging communities not to take the law into their own hands.
Akume also stressed that lasting peace is essential for economic growth, agricultural development, job creation, and general prosperity in the state.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the leadership of MACBAN, and others affected by the tragedy.
The SGF further directed security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to conduct a thorough investigation into the killings and ensure that all those responsible are identified and brought to justice.
He insisted that no one involved in the crime should be spared, adding that justice must be swift, transparent, and complete.
Akume reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling insecurity across the country, noting that security agencies continue to receive support and resources to combat criminal activities.
He also urged residents of Benue State to remain calm, cooperate with security operatives, and provide useful information that could assist ongoing investigations and peace efforts.
