Dr. Romanus Onuche Ajefu Honoured with Silent Heroes Award for Philanthropy

It was a moment of celebration and heartfelt reflection as renowned philanthropist and community development advocate, Dr. Romanus Onuche Ajefu, was honoured with the prestigious Silent Heroes Award for Philanthropy at the 2026 edition of the Silent Heroes Awards held in Abuja.

The colourful ceremony, themed “Invisible Light, Illuminating Lives,” brought together an array of distinguished Nigerians from the public and private sectors, security agencies, the diplomatic community and civil society to celebrate individuals whose quiet acts of service continue to make extraordinary impacts across the country.

Dr. Ajefu was recognised for his enduring commitment to humanitarian service, particularly his unwavering support for vulnerable members of society through life-changing interventions in Okenyi, Ankpa and several other communities across Nigeria.

The organisers noted that over the years, the philanthropist has become a beacon of hope to widows, indigent families, students, the elderly and disadvantaged members of society through numerous charitable initiatives aimed at restoring dignity and improving livelihoods.

Presenting the award, the Silent Heroes Awards Initiative described Dr. Ajefu as a compassionate leader whose generosity has consistently transformed lives without fanfare or the pursuit of public acclaim.

According to the organisers, his philanthropic footprint reflects the true spirit of servant leadership, demonstrating that genuine greatness is measured by the positive impact one makes in the lives of others.

Receiving the award to a standing ovation, Dr. Ajefu expressed profound gratitude to the organisers for the recognition, describing it as a humbling honour that would inspire him to deepen his commitment to humanitarian service.

In an emotional tribute, he dedicated the award to his late parents, whom he credited for laying the foundation for the values that have shaped his life and his passion for giving.

With visible emotion, Dr. Ajefu paid special tribute to his late mother, describing her as the woman who instilled in him the enduring culture of philanthropy, compassion and selfless service.

“My mother taught me that the greatest wealth anyone can possess is the ability to touch lives and bring hope to those in need. Whatever little I have been able to accomplish today is rooted in the values she nurtured in me,” he said.

He added that the recognition would further strengthen his resolve to continue reaching out to the vulnerable, supporting community development initiatives and inspiring others to embrace philanthropy as a way of life.

The event also honoured several outstanding Nigerians across different sectors for their remarkable contributions to nation-building, while highlighting the importance of celebrating unsung heroes whose quiet sacrifices continue to shape the country’s future.

One of the highlights of the evening was the unveiling of the book, “Nigeria’s Silent Heroes,” a publication chronicling the remarkable stories of Nigerians whose unwavering commitment to service has continued to illuminate lives and strengthen communities across the nation.

For many guests, Dr. Romanus Onuche Ajefu’s recognition was a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy is not merely defined by personal success, but by the countless lives he has uplifted through compassion, generosity and an abiding commitment to humanity.
