World Cup: France Defeat Paraguay 1-0 to Reach Quarter-final

France defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, advancing to the quarter-finals after a disciplined and patient performance.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the encounter was expected to test France’s attacking quality against Paraguay’s resilience.

It eventually lived up to expectations as both sides produced a competitive display.

France started brightly and controlled much of the possession in the opening exchanges, moving the ball confidently across the pitch and searching for spaces in Paraguay’s defence.

Paraguay, however, remained compact and organised, frustrating the French attackers with a solid defensive structure and showing determination whenever they were called upon to defend.

The South Americans also attempted to create opportunities on the counterattack, using their pace and direct approach to unsettle France, although neither side was able to produce a breakthrough in the first half.

France’s growing urgency was evident in the 19th minute when Bradley Barcola received a yellow card as the intensity of the contest increased.

In spite of their dominance in possession, France found it difficult to convert their control into clear goalscoring chances.

Paraguay continued to show discipline and composure to keep the score goalless at the interval.

Paraguay returned for the second half with renewed energy, making tactical adjustments aimed at adding more attacking threat.

Juan Canale replaced Omar Alderete in the 58th minute before Gabriel Caballero came on for Julio Enciso in the 61st minute as Paraguay sought to increase their presence in midfield and attack.

France also responded by introducing Désiré Doué for Bradley Barcola in the 61st minute, a substitution that added fresh movement and creativity to their attacking play.

The pressure from the French side eventually yielded results in the 70th minute when Kylian Mbappe converted from the penalty spot to hand his side a deserved lead after sustained attacking efforts.

The goal shifted the momentum of the game, forcing Paraguay to push more players forward in search of an equaliser
