A member of the United States Congress, Riley Moore, has said the US will closely observe Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of a transparent, credible and democratic electoral process.
Moore made the remarks during an interview while discussing Nigeria’s democratic journey and the significance of free and fair elections in Africa’s most populous nation. He noted that the outcome of the 2027 polls would attract global attention because of Nigeria’s strategic role on the continent.
The congressman emphasised that the United States remains committed to supporting democratic values and expects the elections to reflect the will of the Nigerian people. He added that respect for the rule of law, electoral integrity and democratic institutions would be key issues the international community would monitor throughout the electoral process.
Moore also encouraged Nigerian leaders and relevant institutions to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible election, saying strong democratic systems are essential for political stability and economic development.
Nigeria is expected to hold its next general elections in 2027, with political parties already positioning themselves ahead of what is anticipated to be a keenly contested race. The election is expected to draw significant domestic and international attention as the country prepares for another democratic transition.
