The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has praised security agencies and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde following the successful rescue of pupils and teachers kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were released after spending about 56 days in captivity, with the Presidency announcing their rescue on Friday.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the opposition party described the development as a major relief that ended weeks of distress and uncertainty for the victims’ families, the education sector, the Oyo State Government and Nigerians who monitored the situation.
APM commended the Nigerian Army, police and local intelligence teams for what it described as a well-coordinated and strategic operation that led to the safe recovery of the abducted students and teachers.
The party said the cooperation, dedication and professionalism demonstrated by the security personnel were key factors in achieving the successful outcome.
It also praised Governor Makinde for his leadership and efforts towards protecting lives and property in the state, stating that his administration’s partnership with security agencies contributed to the rescue mission.
The party noted that the governor’s continued support for security initiatives and his proactive response to threats helped create the conditions for the operation’s success.
APM, however, stressed that the rescue should serve as a reminder of the need for stronger security measures around schools and communities across the country.
“No Nigerian child or teacher should be forced to seek education under the fear of attacks. Governments at all levels must strengthen security arrangements, especially in areas vulnerable to criminal activities,” the party stated.
The party further expressed solidarity with the rescued victims and their families, urging authorities to provide necessary support as they recover from the experience.
It added that the successful operation would help rebuild confidence in Nigeria’s security system and encourage continued efforts to safeguard schools and other vulnerable institutions.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga had earlier confirmed that the pupils and teachers were freed through the efforts of security agencies.
“Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Oriire, Oyo State, have been rescued by our security agencies,” Onanuga stated.
He revealed that eight suspected members of the kidnapping group were arrested during the operation and handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to him, no ransom exchange or agreement was made with the abductors, adding that a suspected gang leader whose release was demanded by the kidnappers remains in custody and is facing prosecution.
