The traditional ruler of Otukpo Kingdom, Och’Otukpo Odu, Chief John Eimonye, has directed all herders residing across the kingdom to leave the area immediately following a deadly attack in Nobi Village, Otukpo District, Benue State.
The monarch’s directive came after suspected armed herders reportedly attacked the community on Sunday, July 12, 2026, leaving several people dead and heightening fears among residents.
In a statement issued by the Secretary of the Otukpo District Traditional Council, Chief Udeh Adole, the traditional ruler said the decision was taken due to what he described as growing security threats associated with the continued presence of some herders in the area.
Chief Eimonye stated that the order was not intended to target or discriminate against any group, but was aimed at protecting lives, restoring peace, and ensuring the safety of residents.
The monarch expressed concern over repeated attacks allegedly linked to armed herders, lamenting that his people had been left vulnerable to persistent insecurity.
He vowed that Otukpo District would not be allowed to fall under the control of any group, stressing that the people of Otukpo Abakwu Kingdom remained committed to protecting their ancestral land.
The traditional ruler also appealed to security agencies and relevant authorities to urgently intervene and take decisive action to prevent further attacks and safeguard communities within the kingdom.
