The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has praised Nigeria’s security agencies for the successful rescue of the schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, describing the mission as a remarkable example of professionalism and coordinated security operations.
The party also expressed grief over the death of 28-year-old Army officer, Lieutenant Felix Isaac, who lost his life during the operation.
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP noted that the victims regained their freedom after spending more than 56 days in captivity. It said the intelligence-driven operation, carried out jointly by security agencies over several weeks, reflected courage, discipline and effective collaboration.
While applauding the outcome of the rescue, the party maintained that the abduction itself was a painful reminder of the country’s security challenges. It stressed that safeguarding the lives and welfare of citizens remains a constitutional responsibility of government.
According to the SDP, the successful operation demonstrated that Nigeria’s problems can be addressed through responsible leadership, sound governance and the proper deployment of national resources in the interest of the public.
The party celebrated the safe return of the 44 rescued pupils and teachers to their families but lamented the sacrifice of Lt. Isaac, describing him as a hero whose bravery would not be forgotten.
It honoured the late officer for giving his life in the line of duty to restore hope to affected families, adding that his courage and dedication deserved lasting recognition.
The SDP further urged the Federal Government to strengthen efforts to address poverty, hunger and social inequality, which it identified as major drivers of insecurity across the country. It also expressed hope for lasting peace and improved protection of lives and property under Nigeria’s democratic system.
The party’s reaction came shortly after Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde thanked the security agencies for securing the release of the victims. During a visit to them at the Headquarters of the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services in Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, the governor disclosed that the rescued pupils and teachers would remain under medical observation for 48 hours.
Makinde also sympathised with the families of those who lost their lives during the abduction, including Michael Oyedokun, assuring them that their sacrifices would not be in vain.
He added that plans were underway to reunite the rescued victims with their families, revealing that one of the children repeatedly asked to see her mother after regaining freedom.
