POWA President Deepens Welfare Drive for Police Families

By Chinedu Anolue

The National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Mrs Mutiat Disu, on Tuesday reaffirmed the association’s commitment to improving the welfare of police families.

Disu gave the assurance when she paid a surprise visit to the Mobile Police 44 Barracks, Kuje, Abuja.

She said that the visit was part of activities marking the upcoming 2026 POWA annual Convention aimed at supporting vulnerable members of the police community through economic empowerment and humanitarian assistance.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the upcoming POWA annual convention is scheduled to hold between 16 1nd 18.

Speaking with the NAN on the sideline of the visit, she said that the initiative was in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, which sort to improve the lives of vulnerable Nigerians.

“In commemoration of the 2026 POWA annual convention, we have come to show love to our vulnerable brothers and sisters by adding to their businesses,” she said.

The POWA president, accompanied by members of the national delegation, presented food items, cash grants and business starter packs to struggling families, petty traders and widows to support their livelihoods.

She said the outreach was expected to benefit between 200 and 250 women across the Federal Capital Territory.

“Yesterday we distributed items to about 40 individuals. Today in Kuje, we have recorded about 20 to 25 beneficiaries,” she disclosed.

Disu added that the intervention also reflected the objectives of the ”POWA CARES” initiative” introduced when she assumed office as the association’s president.

She expressed confidence that the programme would outlive her tenure.

“POWA is all about continuity. Since we are doing it now, anybody who comes on board will have to key into it,” she said.

She urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the support to improve their businesses and living conditions.

“Please use it wisely. Do not eat it. I pray that it multiplies and blesses your business,” she advised and prayed.

Speaking with NAN, some of the beneficiaries appreciated the gesture and prayed for the success of the tenure of the wife of the IGP.

Mrs Grace Ameh, wife of a police inspector and an egg trader, thanked the association for the assistance and encouraged other police officers wives to participate actively in POWA programmes.

“I want to use this opportunity to advise other women to join POWA because there are more benefits to be expected in future,” she said.

Similarly, Mrs Omotayo Amshima, a beneficiary of the business starter pack and widow of a police officer who died in active service in March 2025, appealed for greater attention to the welfare of widows of fallen officers.

“My husband died in March of last year. Since that time, I haven’t received anything in terms of payment. I am calling on the management to please look into my plight and assist me,” she appealed.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the welfare and economic empowerment of police families across the country.
