The Senate has approved a N50 million donation for the families of five individuals who died during the rescue operation following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced the support on Wednesday during plenary, describing the deaths as a painful sacrifice in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against insecurity.
Akpabio praised the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for successfully rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers after 56 days in captivity.
He disclosed that each of the bereaved families of the two slain teachers and three soldiers would receive N10 million as support and recognition of their sacrifices.
The deceased teachers were identified as Michael Oyedokun, who was reportedly killed by the abductors while in captivity, and John Olaleye, who was said to have been shot during the attack on the school.
The three soldiers who died during the rescue operation were identified as Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome.
The Senate President said the donation was aimed at assisting the affected families while honouring the courage and commitment of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident.
The victims were among those affected by the abduction of pupils and teachers from two schools in Oriire LGA on May 15.
