The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling terrorism and banditry across Nigeria, saying the Tinubu administration remains resolute in restoring peace and security.
Akume, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the SGF, Aminu Yar’Adua, gave the assurance on Friday at the Peace and Security Summit Award held in Abuja. He urged the media to support the country’s security efforts through balanced and responsible reporting. According to him, while incidents of insecurity should be reported, media coverage should also highlight the efforts and sacrifices of security personnel as well as the experiences of victims. He stressed that the government had made significant progress in the fight against criminal groups and would continue to strengthen its operations.
Speaking at the event, the summit convener, Jennifer Serrano, described the gathering as timely in view of Nigeria’s security challenges. She called on Nigerians to unite in supporting government initiatives aimed at ending terrorism and banditry. Also speaking, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Benson Babajimi, represented by Deputy Chairman Ahmad Kalambaina, said the National Assembly remained committed to partnerships that would strengthen the country’s legal framework, promote national unity and enhance security.
Kalambaina noted that peace and security were essential for national development, adding that effective security depended on cooperation between citizens and security agencies. He said the summit provided an important platform for engaging stakeholders on ways to improve the nation’s security architecture and address the growing challenges facing the country.
