Across Africa, the conversation about democratic renewal increasingly centres on one undeniable reality: the future of governance depends on the quality of youth participation today. In Nigeria’s Northeast a region that has experienced conflict, economic hardship, displacement, and political exclusion the need to transform young people from spectators into active democratic stakeholders has never been greater.
It is within this context that the collaboration between Youlead360 Development Initiative and the Network of Civil Society Organisations in Gombe State deserves recognition.
Their Peace and Political Youth Summit, themed “Empowering Youth for Inclusive Governance in Gombe State,” represents more than a one-day event. It is a strategic investment in democratic resilience, civic responsibility, and peaceful political engagement.
Which held at the English Theatre, Gombe State University, the summit brings together youth leaders, students, civil society organisations, policymakers, and development partners to address one of Nigeria’s most pressing democratic questions:
How can young people become meaningful participants in governance rather than passive observers?
Beyond Elections: Building Democratic Citizens
Nigeria possesses one of the world’s largest youth populations.
According to the National Population Commission and international demographic estimates, well over half of Nigeria’s population is below the age of 35. Yet this demographic advantage has not always translated into proportionate political influence.
Many young Nigerians continue to encounter significant barriers, including political exclusion, inadequate civic education, unemployment, misinformation, electoral violence, and limited opportunities for leadership development.
The summit directly responds to these realities through practical objectives:
Promoting civic education and democratic literacy.
Encouraging peaceful political participation.
Building leadership capacity among young people.
Supporting voter registration and PVC collection.
Creating dialogue between youth and governance institutions.
Its ambitious goal of mobilising 10,000 young people across Gombe State for voter registration and civic participation demonstrates that democratic development requires sustained citizen engagement rather than seasonal political mobilisation.
Why the Partnership Matters
One of the greatest strengths of the initiative lies in its collaborative approach.
Youlead360 Development Initiative has consistently promoted leadership development, democratic accountability, youth empowerment, and civic engagement. Through Youth Resolve series,non- formal learning centre, advocacy, capacity building, policy dialogue, and community mobilisation, the organisation continues to encourage young Nigerians to become responsible citizens and ethical leaders.
Working alongside the Network of Civil Society Organisations in Gombe State significantly expands this impact.
Civil society networks possess grassroots legitimacy, local knowledge, and extensive community reach. Their combined expertise enables programmes that are locally relevant while reflecting international democratic standards.
Such partnerships demonstrate an important lesson in democratic development:

Strengthening Democratic Stability in Northeast Nigeria

The Northeast remains strategically important to Nigeria’s democratic future.
The region has endured years of insecurity, humanitarian crises, displacement, youth unemployment, and social fragmentation. Consequently, peacebuilding cannot be separated from democratic participation.
Research by organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), International IDEA, and the African Union consistently shows that meaningful youth inclusion contributes to:
stronger democratic institutions,
reduced political violence,
improved social cohesion,
increased public trust,
and more accountable governance.
When young people are equipped with civic knowledge instead of political manipulation, elections become less vulnerable to violence and more reflective of citizens’ aspirations.
Universities as Democratic Laboratories
Holding the summit at Gombe State University carries symbolic and practical significance.
Universities are not merely centres of academic learning; they are incubators of democratic culture, critical thinking, and civic leadership.
By engaging students directly, the organisers recognise that tomorrow’s legislators, journalists, judges, entrepreneurs, academics, and public servants are today’s undergraduates.
Democracy flourishes when universities produce informed citizens alongside qualified graduates.
From PVC to Public Leadership
The campaign’s emphasis on Permanent Voter Card (PVC) registration deserves particular attention.
A PVC is not merely an electoral requirement.
It represents citizenship in action.
Encouraging voter registration sends a broader message: political participation extends beyond election day. It includes public dialogue, policy advocacy, community service, accountability, and continuous engagement with elected representatives.
The summit therefore moves beyond encouraging voting to cultivating lifelong democratic responsibility.
A Model for Other States
The collaborative efforts of Youlead360 Development Initiative and the Network of Civil Society Organisations provide a model that could be replicated across Northeast Nigeria and beyond.
Their approach integrates:
civic education,
peacebuilding,
youth leadership,
democratic participation,
stakeholder dialogue,
community mobilisation,
and institutional collaboration.
This integrated model aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, which promotes peaceful, just, and inclusive societies through accountable institutions and citizen participation.
Nigeria’s democratic future will not be secured solely through constitutional reforms or electoral technology.
It will be secured when young citizens possess the knowledge, confidence, ethical values, and opportunities to participate meaningfully in governance.
The Peace and Political Youth Summit therefore represents more than another civic event.
It is an investment in democratic culture.
It is an investment in peaceful elections.
It is an investment in responsible citizenship.
And above all, it is an investment in the future of Northeast Nigeria.
As Gombe’s young people gather to discuss governance, peace, and leadership, they remind the nation that democracy is not inherited it is built by informed citizens willing to participate.
