The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has formally inducted 216 graduates of its Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science into the Medical Laboratory Science profession during its 22nd Oath-Taking and Induction Ceremony.

‎The event, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Conference Centre, saw the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, urge the new professionals to uphold the highest ethical standards and remain committed to excellence in their careers. Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ekaete Enang, the Vice Chancellor described the inductees as innovators, problem-solvers and future nation-builders.

‎He reminded the graduates that earning a degree marks only the beginning of their professional journey, encouraging them to continually update their knowledge and skills to keep pace with advances in healthcare and technology. He also urged them to appreciate the sacrifices made by their parents, lecturers and the University while remaining worthy ambassadors of UNICAL.

‎The Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Ngim Ngim, congratulated the graduates on reaching the milestone, applauding their resilience throughout their academic training. He also acknowledged the contributions of the University’s management, academic staff and parents, urging the newly inducted scientists to maintain professionalism, uphold ethical values, collaborate effectively within the healthcare system and support the growth of their alma mater.

‎In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, Prof. Iya Eze Bassey, advised the graduates to remain committed to integrity, innovation and continuous professional development. He stressed the importance of prioritising patient care while representing the University positively in their professional endeavours.

‎The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Dr. Donald Ibe Ofili, represented by Nnenaya Nzeaku, commended the University of Calabar for consistently producing competent Medical Laboratory Scientists. He encouraged the institution to continue strengthening its facilities and human resources to sustain quality training.

‎He also reminded the newly inducted professionals to observe ethical standards, complete the mandatory internship programme before participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), pursue continuous professional development and place patients’ welfare at the centre of their practice.

‎Delivering the induction lecture titled “Quality Medical Laboratory Services in an Era of Rapid Innovations in Science and Technology and Challenging Economy,” Prof. Paul Inyang-Etoh urged the graduates to embrace innovation, digital technology and efficient laboratory management practices. He encouraged them to implement quality management systems, make prudent use of available resources and explore funding opportunities to ensure sustainable laboratory services.

‎According to him, maintaining professionalism and quality assurance while adapting to emerging trends would position them for success in Nigeria’s growing healthcare sector.

‎Chairman of the University of Calabar Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science Alumni Association, Dr. Aniekan-Augusta Eyo, welcomed the inductees into the alumni body and encouraged them to remain connected to the institution through mentorship, service and active participation in advancing the profession.

‎Also speaking, the Chairman of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Cross River State Branch, Mr. Dennis Ekpo, advised the newly inducted scientists to uphold integrity, embrace lifelong learning and play active roles in the association while contributing to the protection of public health.

‎Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, the overall best graduating student and valedictorian, Achor Ajuma Victoria, reflected on the challenges and achievements of their academic journey. She expressed appreciation to God, the University management, lecturers, parents and fellow students for their support, assuring that the Class of 2025 would uphold the values of the University of Calabar and distinguish themselves as worthy ambassadors wherever they serve.
