The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the remand of the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Comrade Adio, by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State.
In a statement issued by the NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the association said it was informed that Adio, who was reportedly the complainant in the case, was remanded in prison over a matter he personally instituted before the court.
NANS described the development as disturbing, alleging that the case was turned against the former student leader through the actions of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the presiding Magistrate.
The association accused the court process of being abused and described the situation as “judicial rascality” and a violation of Adio’s fundamental rights.
Afeez said he had directed the NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Chairman, Ekiti Axis, and the association’s National Head of Administration to commence mobilisation for peaceful demonstrations.
According to him, the planned protests will take place at the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court, and the office of the DPP to demand justice and the immediate release of the former FUOYE SUG president.
“NANS will not stand by while the rights of Nigerian students are trampled upon. We remain committed to defending justice, the rule of law, and the fundamental rights of every Nigerian student,” the statement read.
The student body called for fairness in the handling of the matter and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian students.
