Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the Inner Southern Expressway, popularly known as Goodluck Jonathan Way, will be completed and opened to the public by December.
Speaking on Tuesday after inspecting the ongoing project in Abuja, Wike also visited the construction site of the service carriageways along the Southern Parkway in the Gaduwa District.
According to the minister, the 10-kilometre expressway, which was awarded in 2014, will extend from the Southern Parkway to Ring Road II at Galadimawa and includes the construction of five bridges.
He explained that the project is among the few inherited from previous administrations that are yet to be completed under President Bola Tinubu’s government, alongside the Apo-Karshi Road.
Wike said only six kilometres of the road remain unfinished, adding that the contractor has assured the government the work will be completed by the end of December, provided adequate funding is made available.
Describing the expressway as a strategic infrastructure project, the minister said it would significantly transform the capital city’s landscape upon completion. He added that discussions were ongoing with the Ministry of Finance to secure the funds needed to settle the contractor and ensure timely delivery.
”We will continue engaging the Minister of Finance to ensure funds are released so the contractor can complete the project. It is a critical road that will reshape the FCT. The Apo-Karshi Road, which was awarded in 2010, is also nearing completion, and we inspected it yesterday,” he said.
Wike noted that completing long-abandoned projects aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to finish infrastructure initiated by previous administrations, particularly those awarded between 2010 and 2023.
He said fulfilling that promise would prevent the proliferation of abandoned projects across the Federal Capital Territory and demonstrate continuity in governance.
During the inspection, the minister also assessed progress on the dual service carriageways of the Southern Parkway, stretching from Arterial Road S20 (Oladipo Diya Way) in Gaduwa District to Ring Road II.
The Southern Parkway is regarded as one of Abuja’s major transport corridors, linking several densely populated residential communities across Phases I to IV of the Federal Capital City.
Wike recalled that the project was among those inaugurated to commemorate President Tinubu’s third anniversary in office, expressing optimism that the contractors would meet the December completion deadline.
