First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged the newly elected President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, to leave a lasting legacy that will encourage more women to aspire to leadership positions.
Mrs Tinubu made the appeal on Tuesday while receiving Badejo-Okusanya and a delegation of female lawyers at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. She described the NBA president’s election as a significant milestone for gender inclusion and a demonstration of women supporting one another.
She encouraged Badejo-Okusanya to make the most of her tenure by setting a high standard that would strengthen public confidence in women occupying leadership roles.
Earlier in the day, Badejo-Okusanya had paid a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu ahead of formally taking office as NBA president.
Speaking during the meeting, the First Lady noted that the legal profession is traditionally conservative and urged the new NBA leader to distinguish herself through exemplary service.
“I wish you success in your tenure and appreciate all the women who stood by you. It is important for women to support one another. We hope your leadership will open more doors for women. You must set the standard high,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu also assured the association of her willingness to support its activities whenever necessary.
In her remarks, Badejo-Okusanya thanked the First Lady for the warm reception and praised her efforts through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), describing its programmes as impactful in addressing poverty.
She said her election was made possible by the collective support of women within the legal profession, stressing that many individuals contributed to her victory.
According to her, the First Lady’s leadership has inspired women across different professions to pursue greater responsibilities.
She added that the NBA looks forward to collaborating with the Renewed Hope Initiative on areas of mutual interest.
