Ohanaeze Honours Aguiyi-Ironsi, Fajuyi 60 Years After Civil War-Era Killings

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has marked the 60th anniversary of the deaths of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, and the former Military Governor of the Western Region, Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi.

‎

‎In a statement issued in Enugu on Wednesday by its Global Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, the socio-cultural organisation described the fallen military officers as symbols of bravery, loyalty and national unity.

‎

‎The group, led by its President-General, Sen. Azuta Mbata, said the sacrifice of Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi on July 29, 1966, remained a significant example of patriotism and dedication to service in Nigeria’s history.

‎

‎“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, under the leadership of Sen. Azuta Mbata, joins millions of Nigerians in honouring two remarkable citizens whose lives were tragically ended on July 29, 1966,” Chukwu stated.

‎

‎Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi were taken from the Government House in Ibadan during the July 1966 counter-coup and later killed near Iwo, in present-day Osun State.

‎

‎According to Chukwu, the fate shared by the two officers went beyond ethnic, religious and political differences, highlighting the importance of honour, integrity, duty and commitment to national unity.

‎

‎He noted that Aguiyi-Ironsi devoted his career to serving Nigeria during one of the most difficult periods in the nation’s history, while Fajuyi displayed exceptional courage by refusing to abandon his guest and superior officer despite the threat to his own life.

‎

‎Ohanaeze described Fajuyi’s decision to stand by Aguiyi-Ironsi until their final moments as a remarkable demonstration of loyalty and selflessness.

‎

‎The organisation quoted Mbata as urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from the lives of the two military leaders by promoting fairness, justice and patriotism in the pursuit of national progress.

‎

‎“Their lives remind us that true patriotism is proven through sacrifice, not mere words. They represented duty, honour and the vision of a united Nigeria built on justice and respect,” Mbata said.

‎

‎He added that the relationship between Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi remained a powerful lesson that Nigeria’s diversity should serve as a source of strength rather than division.

‎

‎Ohanaeze said the best way to honour the late officers was for Nigerians to work towards building a country where every citizen enjoys equal rights, opportunities and protection under the law.

‎

‎The group also called for leadership based on accountability, inclusion, justice and reconciliation, while urging Nigerians to reject hatred, violence and intolerance in favour of dialogue, peaceful coexistence and democracy.

‎

‎It expressed confidence that the legacies of Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi would continue to inspire future generations to prioritise national interests above ethnic or sectional considerations.
