Nigerian Woman Faces Six Years in U.S. Prison Over Illegal Voting, False Citizenship Claim ‎

A 63-year-old Nigerian woman, Ada Ngozi Otuka, has pleaded guilty in the United States to illegally voting in five federal elections after falsely presenting herself as an American citizen.

‎

‎Otuka, a resident of Katy, Texas, was not eligible to participate in U.S. elections because she was not a citizen.

‎However, prosecutors said she declared herself an American citizen during voter registration, allowing her to cast ballots unlawfully.

‎

‎According to the U.S. Department of Justice, investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and immigration authorities revealed that Otuka voted in the 2012, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2024 elections.

‎

‎Federal officials reportedly informed her in 2025 that her voter registration had been flagged after records showed she was not a U.S. citizen.

‎

‎Prosecutors said she failed to respond to the notice.

‎

‎Otuka later pleaded guilty before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas to charges of illegal voting by an alien and making a false claim of citizenship.

‎

‎She could receive a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for the offences.

‎

‎Her sentencing has been fixed for November 5.

‎

‎The case comes amid another similar incident involving a British citizen, Samuel James Hall, 50, who also admitted to illegally voting in the 2024 U.S. federal election.

‎

‎Hall, who legally lived in Houston but was not eligible to vote, pleaded guilty in May to unlawfully participating in the election.
