Oyo NUJ Pays Tribute to Veteran Journalist Lekan Alabi

The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed grief over the death of veteran journalist, administrator, author and traditional chief, Oloye Lekan Alabi.

‎

‎The council described the passing of the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland as a significant loss to journalism, Oyo State, Ibadanland and the country at large.

‎In a statement signed by the council’s chairman, Akeem Abas, and secretary, Temidayo Adu, the union said Alabi’s death had created a major gap in the journalism profession and the traditional institution.

‎

‎Alabi, aged 76, reportedly died on Saturday morning in Lagos. He was remembered for his decades of service, professionalism, intellectual contributions and commitment to public service.

‎

‎The NUJ praised the late journalist’s outstanding career, noting that his impact went beyond news reporting as he used journalism to promote public awareness, responsible communication and societal development.

‎

‎According to the council, Alabi’s experience as press secretary to former Oyo State governors reflected his strong communication abilities, administrative skills and capacity to navigate government affairs.

‎

‎The union also highlighted his deep knowledge of Ibadan’s history, culture and traditions, describing him as a key figure whose efforts in preserving and promoting the heritage of Ibadanland would remain unforgettable.

‎

‎The NUJ extended its condolences to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Alabi family and the wider journalism community.

‎

‎It noted that many journalists benefited from Alabi’s guidance, mentorship and wealth of experience, urging young practitioners to emulate the values he represented, including professionalism, courage, discipline and excellence.

‎

‎“Lekan Alabi was not just a journalist; he was an institution whose knowledge, experience and dedication enriched many generations. His contributions to journalism and public service will continue to be remembered,” the council stated.

‎

‎The union prayed for the repose of his soul and asked God to grant his family, colleagues and associates the strength to cope with the loss.
