FCTA to Upgrade Life Camp Recreation Park to International Standard

‎The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has finalised plans to transform the Life Camp Recreation Park in Abuja into a world-class recreational facility, Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has announced.

‎

‎Wike disclosed this on Monday during an inspection of the abandoned park shortly after meeting with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in Abuja.

‎

‎According to the minister, the decision was inspired by a certificate of commendation presented to the FCTA by the First Lady in recognition of its participation in the Green Nigeria Challenge under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

‎

‎He explained that the award reflected the administration’s commitment to converting green spaces into attractive recreational centres while promoting environmental sustainability across the capital.

‎

‎Wike pointed to the recent transformation of the Abuja City Gate, an initiative championed by the First Lady, describing it as a major success. He noted that since its inauguration on July 9, the site has become a popular destination for relaxation and tourism, attracting visitors throughout the day and night.

‎

‎He said the recognition had encouraged the administration to undertake more projects that would improve the city’s landscape, adding that the long-abandoned Life Camp Recreation Park would now receive the attention it deserved.

‎

‎After inspecting the site, the minister expressed satisfaction with its terrain, saying it was suitable for a modern recreational facility. He disclosed that while Julius Berger would be invited to submit a proposal, other construction firms would also be asked to present alternative designs to ensure the administration selected the best option.

‎

‎Wike praised the First Lady for drawing attention to the importance of recreational spaces where residents could relax, exercise and spend quality time with their families.

‎

‎He said the planned redevelopment would include modern facilities that would support sporting activities, leisure, photography and other recreational purposes, bringing the park in line with similar facilities in developed countries.

‎

‎The minister directed the acting Executive Secretary of the FCTA to invite Julius Berger and other interested companies to submit proposals for the project.

‎

‎He added that the redevelopment would be treated as an emergency project to ensure it is completed within the next year.

‎

‎Speaking on the remodelled Abuja City Gate, Wike announced plans to host the country’s first official New Year’s Eve countdown at the location, with the event expected to be led by the First Lady.

‎

‎He said the celebration would feature fireworks and a public countdown to the new year, similar to events held in major cities around the world.

‎

‎The minister reiterated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remained committed to restoring public confidence through projects that improve infrastructure and the quality of life.

‎

‎Earlier on Monday, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu presented Wike with a certificate of commendation for transforming the Abuja City Gate into a prominent recreational and environmental landmark.

‎

‎She also applauded the FCT Administration’s environmental initiatives under the Green Nigeria Challenge and encouraged state governments to replicate similar programmes by involving young people in environmental protection efforts.
