The United Kingdom has appointed Mel Barlow as its next high commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, with the diplomat expected to take over the role in September.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced the appointment on Monday, stating that Barlow will replace Alexandra McKenzie and lead efforts to further deepen bilateral relations between the two countries.
Barlow joined the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in 2002 and has built extensive diplomatic experience through various international assignments. She served in Tokyo from 2006 to 2011 and later worked as a trade policy and economic diplomacy counsellor in Seoul between 2015 and 2018.
From 2022 to 2023, she held the position of deputy head of mission and consul general in Kathmandu before being appointed British ambassador to Laos in 2023.
During her tenure as ambassador, Barlow focused on expanding cooperation between the UK and Laos, particularly in sectors including defence, trade, education and energy, while also promoting investment opportunities and stronger diplomatic engagement.
She is expected to bring her wealth of diplomatic experience to her new posting in Brunei as the UK seeks to strengthen partnerships in Southeast Asia.
