‎WestJet Resumes Flights After Cabin Crew Strike Ends With Tentative Deal

‎Flight operations have returned to normal across Canada after WestJet and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) reached a tentative agreement, bringing an end to the strike by the airline’s flight attendants.

‎

‎The industrial action, which began on Sunday, forced the cancellation of more than 300 flights and disrupted the travel plans of thousands of passengers.

‎

‎CUPE confirmed on Monday that WestJet’s mainline flight attendants had agreed to suspend the strike after both parties reached what the union described as a significant step forward. The proposed deal will now be presented to union members for review and a ratification vote within 30 days.

‎

‎In a statement, the union said the agreement would improve the existing flight credit system by introducing a duty period premium to recognise additional responsibilities carried out by cabin crew, while also increasing compensation for their work.

‎

‎CUPE 8125 President, Alia Hussain, said the agreement was reached through collective bargaining and represented progress for flight attendants.

‎

‎“This tentative agreement acknowledges the increased duties performed by cabin crew and provides improved compensation for their efforts,” Hussain said, adding that members would receive full details before voting on the deal.

‎

‎WestJet Chief Executive Officer, Alexis von Hoensbroech, also confirmed the development, expressing appreciation for the professionalism and commitment of the airline’s cabin crew during negotiations.

‎

‎Canada’s Jobs Minister, Patty Hajdu, was also reported to have welcomed the resolution between the airline and the union.

‎

‎The dispute mainly centred on pay for duties performed by flight attendants while on the ground, including assisting passengers during boarding, carrying out safety procedures and handling delays.

‎

‎Although details of the final agreement have not been released, WestJet had earlier disclosed its proposed offer, which included a 13 per cent salary increase from October 1, 2026, with the adjustment applied retroactively from January 1, followed by annual 2.5 per cent increases through 2029.

‎

‎The end of the strike is expected to allow the airline to gradually restore its flight schedule and reduce further disruptions for passengers.
