Iran and Oman have reached an agreement aimed at restoring the safe movement of commercial vessels through the strategic Strait of Hormuz after months of disruptions linked to tensions in the Gulf.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, disclosed on Wednesday that officials from both countries were finalising a joint communiqué that will formally announce the agreement. He explained that the document would outline the technical, legal, security and environmental framework guiding the arrangement.
According to Baghaei, the statement is currently under review and will be released once completed, provided there is no interference from external actors. He stressed that although the agreement marks a significant step, its success depends on the absence of actions that could undermine the process.
The Iranian spokesman argued that the deal alone would not be enough to guarantee uninterrupted shipping if what he described as the United States’ naval blockade and other measures against Iran remain in place.
Earlier this week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington and Tehran could reach an understanding that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping.
Shipping activities through the vital waterway have faced severe disruption for more than five months following hostilities involving Iran and the United States, affecting global crude oil transportation and international trade.
