FG Directs Geological Agency To Issue Hourly Reports After Abuja Earth Tremors

‎The Federal Government has instructed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to provide hourly updates on seismic activities around Abuja following earth tremors recorded in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

‎

‎The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, gave the directive after the NGSA reported that light earth tremors affected some buildings in the FCT on Tuesday.

‎In a statement released on Wednesday, the minister, who is currently in Washington, D.C., engaging potential American investors on mining partnerships, urged residents not to panic, assuring them that authorities were closely monitoring the situation.

‎

‎Alake said relevant government agencies had already activated precautionary measures to protect lives and property while surveillance continued in the affected areas.

‎

‎He encouraged residents to continue their normal daily activities, stressing that there was no immediate threat to public safety.

‎

‎The minister also instructed the NGSA to send him hourly situation reports to enable continuous evaluation of developments and ensure prompt decisions where necessary.

‎

‎He assured the public that the agency would sustain round-the-clock monitoring of seismic activities and provide timely updates as new information emerged.

‎

‎According to the NGSA, its Seismic Monitoring Station in Utako detected the tremor at 11:23 a.m. on Tuesday.

‎

‎The agency said the seismic event originated at a depth of about one kilometre and travelled roughly four kilometres within five seconds.

‎

‎It classified the incident as a minor seismic event, measuring between levels I and II on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, adding that current findings showed no immediate cause for concern.

‎

‎However, the agency emphasised the importance of continuous monitoring and public awareness, noting that it would remain vigilant while authorities maintained preparedness to respond swiftly to any changes in the situation.
