The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to guarantee a transparent, peaceful and credible governorship election in Osun State on August 15.
Ladipo Johnson, the NDC candidate for Lagos Central Senatorial District, made the appeal while speaking with journalists in Lagos on Sunday.
Johnson described the election as an important test of INEC’s independence and preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections. He urged the electoral commission, security agencies and other stakeholders to provide a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.
According to him, the federal government and the ruling party should refrain from using government institutions to intimidate or frustrate opposition parties during the electoral process.
He said adherence to the rules by all stakeholders would help rebuild public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Johnson also encouraged eligible voters in Osun State to participate massively in the election, arguing that strong voter turnout could make electoral manipulation more difficult.
He urged citizens to take responsibility for choosing their leaders rather than leaving the process entirely in the hands of politicians.
The NDC chieftain particularly warned young people against allowing politicians to recruit them as political thugs. He said temporary financial incentives offered during elections could not compensate for the long-term consequences of poor governance.
Johnson also appealed to political parties and their supporters to reject violence, stressing that political office should be viewed as an opportunity to serve the people rather than a battle for control of public resources.
He expressed confidence that the election could reflect the wishes of Osun voters if INEC, security agencies and other institutions involved remained committed to their constitutional responsibilities.
“I wish the people of Osun well. I pray that their choice will stand and bring development to the state,” he said.
Johnson urged the electoral commission and security agencies not to disappoint Nigerians, saying their commitment to fairness and professionalism would be crucial to ensuring a free and credible poll.
He ultimately wished Osun residents a peaceful election and expressed hope that the outcome would usher in greater development and prosperity for the state.
