The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two men suspected of dealing in illicit drugs in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, and recovered narcotics estimated at ₦6.2 million.
The operation, conducted by personnel of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, also led to the seizure of ₦598,400 in cash.
The command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, announced the arrests in a statement released on Tuesday in Awka, saying the operation was based on credible intelligence about suspected drug dealers operating in the area.
According to him, police operatives raided a suspected criminal hideout in Obosi, where they apprehended two men identified as 47-year-old Nzube Onyedikachukwu, also known as Onyeoma, and 20-year-old Ugochukwu Azia.
Ikenga said the search of the location uncovered quantities of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa, methamphetamine and other illegal drugs.
He said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects were allegedly involved in the distribution of illicit substances.
The police spokesman further disclosed that investigators suspected the location was being used as a meeting point by criminal elements after carrying out unlawful activities.
He added that some individuals reportedly escaped after noticing the arrival of the police.
The two suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue into the source of the drugs, the recovered cash and the wider distribution network. Police are also working to identify other persons allegedly connected to the operation.
The operation, Ikenga said, was carried out in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for sustained intelligence-driven efforts against criminal networks across the country.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Ama, reaffirmed the command’s determination to intensify raids and targeted operations aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts across the state.
Ama called on residents, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders to provide security agencies with timely and credible information about suspicious activities.
He said cooperation from the public would remain crucial to strengthening security and reducing criminal activities across Anambra.
