Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that Kyiv has submitted proposals to US negotiators as part of efforts to find a possible resolution to the ongoing war with Russia.
Zelensky made the disclosure on Wednesday during his nightly video address, saying Ukraine had formally communicated its proposals to the American side. However, he did not reveal the details of the plan.
The Ukrainian leader also warned that Russia could potentially use next month’s parliamentary election as justification for launching a fresh mobilisation.
According to Zelensky, US negotiators are expected to visit both Ukraine and Russia in the coming days. He added that Washington could also play a role in strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities.
Peace negotiations have made little progress in recent months, with Kyiv continuing to advocate for a ceasefire after almost four and a half years of fighting.
US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner last travelled to Moscow in January but have yet to visit Kyiv.
Meanwhile, Russia has maintained that it is open to a settlement but insists that any agreement must involve Ukraine withdrawing completely from four regions claimed by Moscow. The Kremlin has also demanded that what it calls the “root causes” of the conflict be addressed.
