The Enugu State Ministry of Transport has issued a seven-day ultimatum to roadside traders operating along the Abakpa Nike axis to vacate the roads and other areas obstructing traffic.
The Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, announced the directive on Wednesday as part of the ministry’s ongoing campaign to improve road safety and ease traffic movement in the area.
Ozor said the sensitisation exercise covered key locations, including Ukwu Aki, Texaco, Nowas, T-Junction and Nkwo, where road obstructions and traffic violations have continued to disrupt the free movement of vehicles.
He explained that motorists and tricycle operators were educated on the dangers and consequences of driving against traffic, while traders were directed to remove their activities from roadways and other obstructed spaces within seven days.
According to the commissioner, the government is currently focused on public awareness, but enforcement and prosecution of offenders will begin immediately after the expiration of the grace period.
Ozor urged motorists, traders and residents to cooperate with the state government, stressing that keeping the roads clear was essential to making the Abakpa Nike axis safer and more accessible.
“One-way driving is a death trap. Keep to your lane and keep the roads clear,” he warned.
