IG Disu Reaffirms Police Commitment to U.S.-Nigeria Security Roadmap

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to supporting the implementation of the U.S.-Nigeria Joint Working Group roadmap on security and human rights.

‎

‎Force spokesperson, Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, following the second meeting of the U.S.-Nigeria Joint Working Group on Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

‎

‎The meeting, held in Washington, D.C., reviewed Nigeria’s progress under the roadmap for the April–June 2026 reporting period and identified areas requiring stronger cooperation between both countries.

‎

‎Nigeria’s delegation included the National Security Adviser and the ministers of foreign affairs, interior and defence, alongside service chiefs and heads of other security and law enforcement agencies.

‎

‎In his presentation, Disu outlined the police force’s ongoing efforts to tackle kidnapping and banditry, improve security in vulnerable communities, strengthen early-warning systems and facilitate the protection and safe return of internally displaced persons.

‎

‎He said specialised police units were deployed to vulnerable local government areas during the period under review to enhance public safety and prevent attacks by criminal and extremist groups.

‎

‎The police chief also disclosed that the recruitment of 50,000 police constables had progressed to the final pre-training stage. According to him, preparations are underway for comprehensive training built around an improved curriculum and international best practices.

‎

‎Disu further highlighted the police’s role in advancing the roadmap through professional policing, community protection, stronger investigative capacity and support for Nigeria’s broader security and rule-of-law objectives.

‎

‎He also pointed to increased engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other community stakeholders as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the police and the public.

‎

‎The IGP stressed that public trust, religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence remain essential to achieving lasting security in Nigeria.
