The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has congratulated the Government and People of Zambia on the re-election of His Excellency Mr. Hakainde Hichilema as President of the Republic of Zambia for a second term.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia declared President Hichilema the winner after he secured “approximately 60 percent of the votes cast” in the presidential election held on 13 August 2026.
In a statement signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria “commends the Zambian people for their participation in the electoral process and reaffirms its confidence in Zambia’s democratic institutions and longstanding tradition of constitutional governance.”
“Nigeria notes the competitive nature of the electoral process and encourages all stakeholders to sustain dialogue, tolerance and national unity in the post-election period,” the statement added.
The Federal Government said it “attaches great importance to its longstanding relations with Zambia, which are anchored on shared historical experiences, African solidarity, mutual respect and common interests.”
“As members of the African Union, both countries share a commitment to promotion of peace, security, democratic governance, regional integration and sustainable development on the continent,” it stated.
The Federal Government of Nigeria said it “looks forward to working closely with President Hichilema and his administration to further deepen and strengthen Nigeria-Zambia bilateral relations and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade and investment, agriculture, energy, mining, infrastructure, education and people-to-people exchanges.”
“Nigeria recognises Zambia’s important contributions to regional peace and stability and remains committed to working with Zambia and other African partners towards addressing the continent’s peace and security challenges through African-led initiatives, dialogue and cooperation,” the Ministry said.
As President Hichilema commences his second term, Nigeria “wishes him wisdom, strength and success in the discharge of his responsibilities.”
“Nigeria expresses confidence that his renewed mandate will further contribute to Zambia’s peace, stability, economic development and prosperity,” the statement said.
The Federal Republic of Nigeria “once again congratulates President Hakainde Hichilema and wishes the Government and people of the Republic of Zambia continued peace, unity, stability and sustainable development.”
