A coalition of six opposition political parties has proposed the formation of a “Government of National Competence” that would operate for a single four-year transition term if elected in the 2027 general elections.
The proposal was unveiled on Monday at an opposition parties’ summit organised by the G100 in Abuja.
The parties represented at the summit include the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Presenting the proposal, former APC national vice-chairman (North-West), Salihu Lukman, said the proposed government would be founded on four key principles: competence, integrity, national inclusion and fair representation.
The coalition also proposed an enforceable transition charter to ensure that all participating parties and political actors adhere to the agreement.
Under the proposed arrangement, the coalition would establish committees responsible for central leadership, publicity and communication, as well as legal affairs. It would also create working groups focusing on democratic renewal, the single-term transition charter, national reforms, opposition unity and the selection of a common presidential candidate.
Lukman stressed that the initiative was not aimed at dissolving any political party or compelling any candidate to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.
He explained that the immediate objective was to create a framework for cooperation among opposition forces before discussions on leadership and the selection of candidates.
According to him, the G100 is facilitating the process without endorsing any particular political party or presidential aspirant, with the broader objective of presenting Nigerians with what the coalition described as a credible alternative government in 2027.
