The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced a 9-hour emergency maintenance operation at the Katampe 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation in Abuja, a move expected to temporarily disrupt electricity supply to some customers served by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). TCN said the urgent intervention, scheduled from 10am to 7pm on Saturday, September 5, 2026, is required to seal an oil leak detected in one of the transformers at the transmission facility.
The maintenance comes as the transmission operator moves to prevent the fault from escalating into a more serious breakdown that could further undermine electricity supply to parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to TCN, some circuits connected to the affected transformer will be taken out of service during the exercise, limiting the amount of electricity AEDC can receive and distribute through some of its feeders.
“During the maintenance, some circuits will be impacted,” TCN said in a statement signed by its management on Saturday.
The Company explained that the temporary restriction would leave AEDC unable to offtake electricity from some feeders supplying customers connected to the affected transformer.
The development means electricity consumers in some areas supplied through the impacted feeders may experience temporary power interruptions while the maintenance crew works to contain the oil leakage.
TCN, however, stressed that the intervention was necessary to ensure the reliability and safety of the transmission infrastructure, with the maintenance crew expected to complete the work within the scheduled nine-hour window.

TCN apologised to electricity consumers for the inconvenience arising from the temporary interruption and assured that the maintenance would be concluded within the stipulated period.
The Company said normal transmission operations would resume after the affected equipment has been safely restored.
The Katampe facility is one of the key transmission installations serving the Abuja electricity network, making the maintenance critical to sustaining the stability of power supply within the Federal Capital Territory.
TCN urged affected electricity consumers to bear with the disruption as its engineers work to seal the transformer’s oil leakage and return the impacted circuits to normal operation.
