US Preparing $2.8bn Arms Package for Israel, Report Says

The United States is preparing an arms package worth about $2.8 billion for Israel, including 40,000 2,000-pound bombs, according to a report by The Washington Post.

‎

‎The proposed deal, described as the largest single US sale of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel in recent years, reportedly includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 bombs.

‎A US official cited by the newspaper also said the package would contain 20,000 I-2000 penetrator warheads.

‎

‎The pending transaction has reportedly been informally presented to congressional committees, while the administration of President Donald Trump is said to be seeking approval from leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

‎

‎The arms would be financed through the US Foreign Military Financing programme, under which Israel would use grants to acquire the weapons.

‎

‎The reported package is larger than an earlier US sale of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel valued at about $2.04 billion in 2025.

‎

‎The MK-84 is a large conventional bomb capable of penetrating metal and thick concrete and has been described by The Washington Post as one of the most destructive munitions in Western military arsenals.

‎

‎Israel has faced criticism over its use of MK-84 bombs during military operations against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, with concerns also raised over the potential humanitarian impact of the weapons.

‎

‎Asked about those concerns, a senior Trump administration official told The Washington Post that foreign arms sales were undergoing the appropriate process but declined to comment specifically on pending transactions.
