The successful coronation of His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, as the sixth Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom on September 26, 2026, represents far more than a colourful traditional ceremony. It is a powerful reaffirmation of the enduring identity, history, culture and institutional heritage of one of the Niger Delta’s most historically significant kingdoms.
Behind such historic moments are often years of advocacy, community mobilisation, institutional engagement and the determined efforts of individuals who understand that traditional institutions constitute an important part of a people’s identity.
Among the political figures whose contributions to the preservation and projection of Opobo’s heritage deserve recognition is Hon. Awaji-Inombek Dagomie Abiante, the federal lawmaker representing Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency.
Abiante’s contribution is particularly significant because it extends beyond conventional constituency representation. His advocacy for the preservation of the history of King Jaja of Opobo has placed Opobo’s cultural heritage within a broader national conversation.
In August 2024, the Federal Government inaugurated a technical committee for the establishment of the King Jaja of Opobo Historical and Cultural Centre. The Federal Ministry of Information reported that Abiante had been a lead lobbyist for the project and that the initiative had taken about seven years of advocacy before reaching that milestone.
That achievement demonstrates a dimension of political representation that is sometimes overlooked: the ability of an elected representative to connect a community’s aspirations with institutions of the Federal Government.
For Abiante, the project was not simply about constructing another cultural facility. He explained that it was intended to deepen research into King Jaja’s history, expose the heritage of the Opobo people and create opportunities in tourism, employment and the emerging blue economy.
This vision is particularly relevant in a kingdom whose historical significance extends beyond Rivers State. King Jaja of Opobo occupies an important place in the history of commerce, resistance, diplomacy and the development of the Niger Delta. The proposed cultural centre therefore represents an opportunity to transform historical memory into education, tourism and economic activity.
The recent coronation of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja consequently provides a timely occasion to revisit the broader cultural advocacy surrounding the Opobo monarchy. The new monarch, who was elected in December 2025 following the death of King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, was formally crowned at King Jaja Square in Opobo Town on September 26, 2026.
Abiante’s role should therefore be viewed within this larger continuum: strengthening the institutional recognition of Opobo’s history while supporting the preservation of the heritage around which successive generations can build.
His approach also illustrates what constituency representation can become when political office is connected to cultural diplomacy. Rather than limiting representation to roads, empowerment programmes and physical infrastructure, cultural advocacy can preserve a people’s story and create platforms through which that story is presented to Nigeria and the international community.
The Federal Government’s own position reinforces this potential. At the inauguration of the technical committee, the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy described the cultural centre as a vehicle for cultural preservation, tourism, employment generation and national cohesion.
For Opobo, this is significant.
A kingdom’s strength is not measured only by the magnificence of a coronation ceremony. It is also measured by the preservation of its history, the dignity of its traditional institution and the ability of its people to communicate their heritage to future generations.
That is where Abiante’s contribution assumes importance.
As a representative of Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro, his advocacy demonstrates an understanding that political leadership can serve as a bridge between the aspirations of traditional institutions and the machinery of government.
The successful coronation of Jeki VI has now opened another chapter in Opobo’s history. The challenge ahead is to ensure that the renewed visibility generated by the coronation translates into sustained cultural preservation, tourism development, historical research, youth opportunities and greater recognition of Opobo’s contribution to Nigeria’s national story.
Abiante’s advocacy for the King Jaja Cultural and Historical Centre provides one concrete example of how such a vision can be pursued.
Ultimately, the coronation belongs to the Opobo Kingdom and its people, while the throne belongs to the new Amanyanabo. But the preservation and projection of the kingdom’s heritage require the collective commitment of traditional rulers, government, community leaders and citizens.
In that continuing assignment, Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante’s documented advocacy for the immortalisation of King Jaja and the advancement of Opobo’s cultural heritage deserves to be recognised as part of the wider story of a kingdom determined to preserve its past while positioning itself for a more prominent future.
