Kogi: INEC Office Besieged By Mob, Situation Under Control As Military Steps In

By Omonu YG Nelson

LOKOJA, KOGI STATE – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kogi State has condemned the siege on its State Headquarters in Lokoja this morning by a mob that barricaded all entrances to the office and prevented access to staff to carry out routine duties.

The siege also prevented attorneys representing political parties involved in the recent off-cycle governorship elections from inspecting documents/materials used in the election.

“The siege on our office is a clear attempt to disrupt the electoral process and undermine the credibility of the recent governorship election,” said INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Hale Gabriel.

“We condemn this act of violence and intimidation in the strongest possible terms. We call on all parties to respect the rule of law and allow INEC to carry out its duties without hindrance.”

The Nigerian Army has been deployed to the INEC office to maintain normalcy and ensure the safety of staff and property.

“We appreciate the prompt intervention of the military,” said Dr. Gabriel. “We are confident that the security agencies will take all necessary measures to prevent further disturbances.”

INEC is committed to providing unimpeded access to all materials needed to prosecute petitions related to the off-cycle governorship election.

“We urge all parties to cooperate with us and allow the legal process to take its course,” said Dr. Gabriel.

“We are determined to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that the will of the people prevails.”

INEC has appealed to the public to remain calm and patient as the situation unfolds.

“We will keep the public updated on any further developments,” said Dr. Gabriel.

Update:

The situation at the INEC office is now under control. The military has stationed an armored tank at the office to deter any further disturbances.

Security around the INEC office has been beefed up and remains watertight as of this evening.
