The Forum of Igala Journalists (FORIJA) has welcomed the return of relative peace to the Itobe-Anyigba road, particularly the Itobe-Ajegwu-Ojodu axis which for months was a den of dare-devil kidnappers.
‎‎In a press statement signed by its Secretary General, Mr. Yusuf Akogu, and issued on Friday, October 9, 2026, the forum said it received the development with “profound relief.”
‎‎According to FORIJA, the road which “for months was turned into a den of dare-devil kidnappers, inflicting fear, trauma and hardship on commuters and residents,” has now recorded improved security following concerted efforts by stakeholders.
‎The journalists’ body commended all stakeholders whose collaborative efforts led to the sanitisation of the critical corridor.
‎‎”We commend all stakeholders whose collaborative efforts led to the sanitisation of this critical corridor. Our profound appreciation goes to the Kogi State Government, the gallant security agencies, traditional institutions, local vigilante groups, and the resilient communities along that route who refused to surrender their land to criminality,” the statement said.
‎‎FORIJA however cautioned that the gains must be sustained.
‎‎”While this is a welcome development, FORIJA wishes to emphasize that all hands must be on deck to sustain the prevailing peace. The gains achieved must be consolidated and not allowed to be reversed,” Akogu stated.
‎The Forum further called on relevant authorities to ensure that suspects arrested in connection with the kidnappings are prosecuted to serve as deterrent.
‎‎”To this end, we call on relevant authorities to ensure that all those apprehended in connection with the kidnappings and other violent crimes on that stretch are made to face the full wrath of the law. Justice must be served visibly to serve as a deterrent. Cases of those arrested for these deadly crimes must not be swept under the carpet,” the statement added.
‎‎The group stressed that security remains a collective responsibility, urging residents to remain vigilant.
‎‎”Security remains a collective responsibility. We therefore call on the people of the area, particularly vigilante groups, youth leaders and community stakeholders, to remain vigilant and work closely with security agencies to ensure this menace is permanently eradicated,” FORIJA said.
‎The Forum concluded by restating its commitment to promoting peace, security and development across Igala land through responsible journalism and appreciating every effort made so far.
