At least 39 people were killed as two high-speed trains collided in Spain on Wednesday morning.
Wednesday’s collision is the third recorded in Spain this year.
The trains carrying about 500 passengers collided in Spain’s Toledo province, authorities confirmed.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed sadness over the crash and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
“Shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo,” Mr Sanchez said. “I remain in constant contact with the Minister of Transport, @oscar_puente_, and with the president of Castilla-La Mancha, @garciapage.”
Mr Sanchez said emergency services were working on the ground to assist those affected and ensure their safety, coordinating with all involved administrations.
Toledo’s train collision is the third rail disaster in Spain in 2026, following two high-speed train collisions near Adamuz in January and another in southern Spain’s Córdoba province, which killed more than 40 people.
