Russia has announced its support for Ghana’s application to join the BRICS economic bloc as a partner country and pledged to seek backing from other founding members.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made this known during a breakfast meeting with African foreign ministers on October 28, 2026, according to a statement from Ghana’s foreign ministry on Monday.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who is in Russia alongside President John Mahama for the Russia-Africa Summit, expressed appreciation to Mr Lavrov for the support.
The meeting was part of a series of strategic engagements between African foreign ministers and their Russian counterparts on the sidelines of the summit.
The Ghanaian government added that it would continue to uphold its foreign policy of non-alignment, maintaining friendly relations with all countries while pursuing diversified development opportunities in the country’s national interest.
